Fforest Fawr Geopark

Wales' First European Geopark

Jurassic Period

(199 to 145 million years ago)

No rocks of this age are known to be preserved within Fforest Fawr Geopark.  The nearest preserved Jurassic rocks are found across the Vale of Glamorgan and at Newport on the Severn estuary.  Much of Wales was land during the period although sea levels are thought to have varied considerably.

What's in a name?

The name of this period comes from the Jura Mountains of eastern France where rocks of this age are abundant.
