Taf Valleys

Coming up from the south? Some great experiences only a stone’s throw from Merthyr Tydfil.

These valleys have been changed by man more than any others in the Geopark – reservoirs, forests and railways – but it makes for a great mix and they’re so accessible.

Cwm Taff from Cefn Cil-sanws

Cwm Taff and Llwyn-on Reservoir from the western slopes of Cefn Cil-sanws. The Old Red Sandstone peak of Fan Fawr fills the distant view. Cliffs of Carboniferous Limestone, home to rare whitebeam trees, tower over screes beside the road north to Brecon.

  • Brecon Mountain Railway — sit back and enjoy the scenery under someone else’s steam!
  • Garwnant — the Forestry Commission’s new centre
  • Taff Trail — on foot or by bike, a great way to see the two valleys.
  • Pen y Fan — this and other summits of the central Beacons can be enjoyed from the upper reaches of Cwm Taf Fechan.
