Over the hill from Brynaman
The larger part of the community lies within Fforest Fawr Geopark. Llangadog itself lies outside the designated areas as does the neighbouring settlement of Felindre whilst those of Bethlehem lie on the border and Rhyd-y-saint and Capel Gwynfe lie well within.
The lie of the land
Much of the community’s eastern boundary is defined by the Afon Sawdde/Sawdde Fechan whilst to the NW it is defined by the Afon Tywi (River Towy). Its southern boundary approximates to the east-west aligned watershed along the top of Y Mynydd Du (The Black Mountain)
The community ranges in height from around 30m in the extreme west (SN 652238) to an elevation of 616m at the summit of Moel Gornach (SN 740189). Other notable summits include:
- Foel Fraith 602m (SN 756183)
- Cefn y Cylchau 556m (SN 757197)
- Carn Pen-y-clogau 523m (SN 717185)
- Tair Carn Uchaf 480m (SN 693173)
- Pen-y-Bicws 415m (SN 699229)
- Carn Goch 236m (SN 691242)
Hard rock
A variety of rock types underlie the area from Ordovician in the north, through Silurian and Devonian to Carboniferous in the south.
Legacies of the Ice Ages
The area lay under the Towy Valley glacier at the height of the Ice Age.
Archaeology
Notable archaeological sites include the twin sites of Y Gaer Fawr and Y Gaer Fach which occupy the broad plateau atop the prominent hill of Carn Goch. Historic cairns are scattered about the community, most especially on the higher ground in the south, and notably at the SW corner at Tair Carn Uchaf.
