Beyond the Gwydderig
On the northern edge of the Geopark, only a very small part of the Community lies within the area.
The lie of the land
The Community ranges in height from about 75m in the floodplain of the Afon Bran north of Llandovery to over 510m several km north of the Geopark boundary.
Solid rocks
The Community straddles a zone of complex geology largely involving rocks of Silurian and Ordovician age. Folded and steeply tilted towards the southeast this is known as the ‘Myddfai Steep Belt’.
Numerous geological faults run through the area in the same direction.
Legacy of the Ice Ages
The gorge of the Afon Gwydderig is a major breach in the Epynt/Myddfai scarp almost certainly caused by glacial meltwater.
Archaeology
Traces of the Roman road running north-east from Llandovery can be found in the area.

Geology
Sheet 213 ‘Brecon’ of the British Geological Survey’s 1:50,000 geological map series provides complete coverage of the bedrock and superficial geology of that part of the Community which falls within the Geopark. Coverage of the remainder of the Community is achieved by sheets 195, 196 and 212. BGS publishes a ‘sheet explanation’ to accompany the map.
General
The following Ordnance Survey maps cover the Community:
- Landranger sheet 160 ‘Brecon Beacons’ (1:50,000 scale)
- Explorer sheet OL12 ‘Brecon Beacons National Park/Western area’ (1:25,000 scale)
Public transport
Bus services operate along the A40 Brecon-Llandovery trunk road which runs through the Community. The Heart of Wales Railway line runs through Llandovery to the north-west.
See Traveline Cymru for bus and train services including stops, timetables and route-planning information.
