Cwmamman

The south-western corner of the Geopark

The main settlements within the community lie along the Amman and comprise Glanaman and Garnant together with Twynmynydd.  Much of the rest of the settlement within Cwmamman is dispersed.

The lie of the land

The community ranges in height from about 75m (SN 657132)* to 480m at Tair Carn Uchaf (SN 693173).  Other notable summits include:

  • an un-named hill of 341m (SN 662107);
  • the trig point of Tair Carn Isaf (459m) (SN 683167);
  • Foel Deg-arbedol (385m) (SN 705160);
  • Banc Cwmhelen (320m) (SN 683113)*;
  • Bancbryn (324m( (SN 686102)*

The community is drained by the westward-flowing Afon Aman / River Amman and its tributaries, the Nant Pedol, ?Cwm Garnant* and Nant Garenig*.

Hard rock

Cwmamman sits over Coal Measures rocks of Carboniferous age.  These are principally shales and mudstones which include beds of both sandstone and numerous coal seams.

Archaeology

Notable archaeological sites within the community include a settlement on the slopes of Drysgol and cairns along the ridge between Tair Carn Isaf and Tair Carn Uchaf.

Sheet 230 ‘Ammanford’ of the British Geological Survey’s 1:50,000 map series of England and Wales gives full coverage of the Community.  Two versions are available – one showing the bedrock (or ‘solid’) geology and the other showing the superficial deposits (or ‘drift’ geology) which overlie the solid rocks.

Public transport

Bus services operate along the A474 road.  The nearest railway station is at Ammanford on the Heart of Wales Railway line.
