Pant
Where track and trails make for the hills
Pant stretches north from the Heads of the Valleys Road to the gorge of the Taf Fechan. No part of the community is within the Geopark but it borders it for 6km. Locations outside the Geopark are denoted by an asterisk (*)
The lie of the land
The community ranges in height from around 240m at Pont Sarn on the Taf Fechan up to 530m at Pwll Mere in the northeast. It is drained by that river and the Nant Morlais* which flows south through Merthyr Tydfil*.
Solid rocks
The gorge of the Taf Fechan is cut into the Carboniferous Limestones which dominate the northern and western parts of the community.
The southern and eastern parts of the community are underlain by sandstones and mudstones of the Namurian and Westphalian (Lower Coal Measures) parts of the Carboniferous period.
These rocks dip generally towards the southeast. A series of geological faults run in a NW-SE direction.
Legacy of the Ice Ages
Much of the ground is covered by glacial till.
Archaeology
The remains of Morlais Castle* overlook the Taf Fechan.
