Cyfarthfa
Where town meets country
The Community comprises Gellideg and Heolgerrig on the western margins of Merthyr Tydfil all bordering the Geopark.
The lie of the land
The community ranges in height from around 160m beside the Afon Taf to just over 380m at Bryn Du (SO 000080).
It is drained by the Afon Taf and its tributary the Nant Ffrwd.
Solid rocks
The area is underlain by mudstones from the Lower and Middle Coal Measures together with some of Namurian age in the north. The Coal Measures contain numerous coal seams. The rocks dip gently in a generally southerly direction.
Legacy of the Ice Ages
The area is plastered with glacial till.
Archaeology
There is a scatter of cairns on the slopes of Bryn Du.
